We started this project in 2017, with the goal of bringing the most ancient past ‘back to life’ by combining heavily researched Stone and Bronze Age Living history with online content. Since 2020, we have posted daily on our prehistory dedicated Instagram, and as of May 2024 we have been uploading monthly YouTube videos with the aim of bringing an interest into the lives of our ancestors!

Reading about the ancient past can grant you a glimpse into what the world was like for our predecessors, however this can be a somewhat 2D view. This is why we believe interactive living history displays offer a unique and more complete experience for the public to learn about the prehistoric world. Over the last few years we have been working hard to improve both our Neolithic and Bronze Age costumes and interactive displays, and have made movements towards creating earlier Stone Age kits, so that we can offer well researched and friendly visitor experiences!

In my own research into prehistory I have been fortunate enough to explore many ancient sites, both at home in the UK and abroad. thanks to these visits I have gained not only a more intimate knowledge of these sites, but also collected thousands of images and hours of footage. with these, I have been daily sharing the places that were once special to our ancestors, with the aim of encouraging interest into the very beginning of our species story.

Hello! I’m seeing a lot of new names so I thought I’d reintroduce myself a bit! Im Graenwulf Aka David, and I’m a part time archaeology student and full time worker, and ancient living historian / reenactor. I create my own ‘prehistoric’ costumes using as-close-to authentic materials as I can to recreate the clothing and tools used by our Stone Age and Bronze Age ancestors. I’ve been fortunate over the last few years to have been able to visit many ancient sites throughout Europe, from Orkney to Sardinia, and Italy to Austria, and throughout these trips I’ve been sharing my adventures right here on instagram. To answer some of the most frequently asked questions: 1) I find the Neolithic so interesting because it’s where we see the first glimpse of a way of life that we today might recognise, almost the era which birthed most of our modern view of the world 2) Yes I do make my own costumes, with some exceptions with things I’ve not yet developed the skills to make. Do you think you could live in a 1600s Scottish Farmhouse? I thought I’d share some clips I’ve taken in the Kirbuster farmhouse on Orkney, as the weather recently, with its sudden cold weather, has made me think of the islands to the north. The farmhouse is an interesting example of early modern building, and is the last unchanged Northern European ‘firehoose’ in existence. The room is rather reminiscent of Neolithic houses, which exist in abundance on Orkney and her surrounding islands. The fireplace sits at the centre of the room, and uses peat - a burnable turf found in Northern Britain and Ireland with a scent fairly close to that of Whisky - as its fuel. To the side of the room is a ‘Neuk’ which holds a bed, separated from the room by two large flagstones which further add to that late Stone Age feel. Opposite this is a dairy room from a later date, which would have acted as a cool storage space in the years before refrigeration. As I said, the building is hundreds of years old and is structurally unchanged, built towards the end of the 1500s and inhabited until the 1960s. Since then, it has become a beautiful little museum to island farm life which is free to enter, and is situated to the north of the Orkney mainland. This is Assycombe stone row, a Bronze Age (or perhaps even Neolithic) monument built by the ancient communities of Dartmoor. The Stone row, which is made of two lines with a total of 84 stones, terminates in a now ruined cairn. At the very end of the stone row, to the left of you are walking down the ancient path, sits the remnants of a roundhouse, which could also be contemporary with the other parts of the monument. Into a Giants Tomb! This is one of the famous Bronze Age ‘Barrows’ of Sardinia, known colloquially as a ‘giants tomb’ due to the impressive size of the megalithic burial monument. These tombs were used by the Bronze Age Nuragic civilisation who were responsible for thousands of huge stone structures throughout Sardinia, taking the form of both Tombs such as this one, and multi-towered near castle like buildings known as Nuraghe. The tomb seen in this video is known as ‘tomba dei giganti S’Ena’e Thomes, as is situated between 2 Nuragic settlements. A Bronze Age ‘cart toy’ dated to around 4000 years ago! This is a clay ‘chariot’ or cart which was discovered in northwest Syria, and now on display at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Chariots such as this, both 2 and 4 wheeled carts were in the region from at least 3200 BC, and were pulled by beasts of burden. I like this little cart, and I wonder what its purpose was given its small size. How our ancestors lived! I love reconstructed historical houses and buildings, such as this Neolithic house at Stonehenge. This is one of the Durrington walls settlement houses reconstructed just beside the museum at Stonehenge’s visitor centre. The site itself, durrington walls, is a fascinating place to get a glimpse of how organised late stone age settlements could be, with an estimated 1000 houses or buildings detected within the settlement (and a proposed 4000 inhabitants!). These small square to round houses, with their thatched roofs and wattle / daub walls, would have provided a place to shelter in warmth generated by the central fire, and for a family to store their belongings in safety. It’s probable, as with later eras, that these homes weren’t places people would spend their day in, rather they would be entered only for the purposes of sleep or rest etc, and for the large part of the waking day those who lived within these huts would have undertaken their tasks elsewhere in the community! Flashback to 1347 BC fashion! This is my recreation of the clothes worn by the Bronze Age Trindhoj Man, who was buried in a barrow cemetery in Denmark over 3000 years ago. Due to the anaerobic nature of the earth his oak coffin was placed in, his clothes were near perfect upon his rediscovery in 1861 (and now stored in the national museum of Denmark). The clothes were complex yet simple, and were all made of wool. His torso was covered in a woollen wrap which had been shaped to his body, with a strap over each shoulder held in place by pins. Have you seen this Stone Age temple before? This is the Neolithic temple of Ta’ Ħaġrat, Malta, built sometime between 3600 BC to 3200 BC (making it older than even Stonehenge!). Sadly much of the temple has succumbed to time and erosion, but in spite of this its huge megalithic facade remains mostly intact. There are a total of 7 known Neolithic temples on the islands of Malta and Gozo, all sharing a collection of features, both architectural and archaeological. It appears that these temples were used for the worship of the Neolithic mother goddess, with many statues and relief images of the well endowed female figure found within the ancient buildings. Worship may have also been made to other gods or spirits (insert any relevant and appropriate word as they didn’t leave us a written record!), as a number of other figures and images appearing throughout the artefacts and remains - mostly of farmed animals such as cattle and pig.
